A Dream Come True

Well, today a dream that has been a part of my dad's life for probably almost his entire life came true: my dad bought a John Deere tractor. This time in real life-size. Not just any John Deere either, but a John Deere that was built the year he was born (which I won't mention ;) Joel was working today so the kids and I headed up to Hanover to spend the day (remember...the whole Sundays alone blog...). My mom told me last night when I called that Dad was going to look at the tractor today in Paisley and how excited he was. It was really cool to be able to see my mom so thrilled for my dad as he left the house to go and see that tractor after lunch. She told me that this is something he's wanted since she's known him, and she was 100% supportive of him buying that tractor. So cool!!!!

The picture above was taken after he got home (now a proud tractor owner :) and showing off the picture to mom. About ten minutes after he left to go view it I thought that I should have sent my digital camera with him. Ah well, I got a picture of the picture and that's enough for now :) As soon as we visit next if he's got it at home (which I'm sure he will), I'll get a good picture of him ON the new tractor!!

I had to chuckle, the tractor he bought was about a 25 minute car ride from Hanover. He asked the guy how long he figured it would take him to drive the tractor home :) I guess he didn't figure that was such a good idea, hehehe. He would have been happy sitting up there though, you can guarantee that.

For a guy who doesn't make decisions lightly and usually needs several days to process information before making a decision, this tractor purchase was quite a miracle! Mom said he saw the ad last night and phoned the man selling it right away! I could hardly believe it. He wasn't going to let this one get away though. Good job Dad...I'm proud of ya :)

The kids and I had quite the exciting drive home tonight too. Just before coming into Blyth a little blue sports car BLEW by me doing, I figured, at least 160km/hr in a 90. I was driving about 105 km/hr and I didn't even see him behind me until he was driving by. I honked the horn because he was being completely dangerous driving at that speed. He got stuck behind two other cars going through Blyth and I told the kids I was going to get his licence plate number and phone the police. When I was finally getting closer (almost through Blyth) the cars turned right and he took off like a shot again. I was so disappointed and told the kids he'd never get caught now. Obi said "Maybe a policeman will catch him up ahead". I told him that there's never a policeman around when you want one. Immediately I thought to myself "gee, that's probably not a really great thing for me to teach him". We got to the top of the hill by the Old Mill and I could just see him at the top of the next hill (already around the big bend..he was truckin). Then I couldn't BELIEVE my eyes...a police car coming the opposite direction was swinging around right on the big bend and was on hot pursuit. I started laughing so hard. When the kids realized what was happening they started cheering and yelling. We passed the cop and blue car pulled over and I just couldn't believe that a cop had been in the right place at the right time. It was SO cool. Obi kept saying "This is a night to remember" and "that was the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life". I think we all laughed the rest of the way home.

I know, I know. Joel tells me never to laugh when people get pulled over because then it will happen to me, but man, this guy was going to kill someone if he didn't get caught. I figured either I'd get to a car accident or he'd just get away scot free. Let's just hope he learned something. Isn't it sweet when you see justice prevail :) What a great day.

Our dads seem to be a lot alike - they are brothers after all! My dad also takes tons of time making big decisions like this.

Way to go, uncle Gary! Glad you've seen this dream realized!

We had a very similar experience with a crazy driver ahead of us last time were on our way to Zurich. We were sure he was drunk and were very thankful to see him pulled over by a cop just a few kms after we spotted him.

I was so thrilled to read about your dad and deer john (pun totally intended). What a relationship they've had all these years and finally he gets to own one.

It's neat to see a guy who has worked hard his entire life to give to his family get something special in return. Way to go Gary.

Mely, I love reading about all your crazy experiences and the things Obi has to say keep me smiling for days.
