Well, I have to admit, I got a little emotional when my little Toyota was towed away today. I'm glad to know that it will go to help people and is not just going to the junkyard. We donated the car to Teen Challenge in London. Teen Challenge Farm is a place where people can go to recover from drug and alcohol addiction. They take these old vehicles and teach the guys skills and fix them up. Then the vehicles are sold at auction and the money goes to the Farm to help other people. It's a pretty cool thing! As I've said before I'm emotional about things and I'm also a packrat. Not that I wanted this old car to sit in my driveway forever either, but it was still a little sad to say goodbye.
I'll never forget when Joel came by with his new car. We had only been dating about a year. I was furious that he bought it because it was a standard and I had no clue how to drive a standard (and was sure I didn't want to learn). We've shared a lot of good memories in that car. Lots of trips lots of different places. For a long time it was our only vehicle (until after Izzy was born and Obi was on the way and we decided we needed a minivan).
You can't really tell from the picture, but our little car was in pretty rough shape. It had a lot of rust and the material covering the ceiling was all falling down, the cupholders were busted, the back door handle busted right off. Despite it all we loved that 17 year old car. I hope that someone will love it as much as we did. I'm sure she's still got some life left in 'er.

It's the old cars that have character and hold so many hours of our memories. I have said goodbye to Sam the Sprint (whose doors wouldn't lock and who had half a key broke off inside the ignition so anyone could start the car with a coin or even a strong thumbnail... but who nobody wanted because the radio didn't work, the muffler had fallen off and major repairs had been made with duct tape during my student years)... then there was Stella the Hyaundi Stellar whose life ended in flames on the 401... and Cali the Cavalier I totalled on a rainy day... and of course, our most recent goodbye, Curtis the Corolla. I took comfort in knowing he went to a good home too. Lionel (our Legacy) only has 10000 km of memories, but has been good to us so far.
Hey, thanks for letting me reminisce here on your blog. All that to say... the grief does pass with time and leaves some sweet memories!
