I was watching the new Gill Deacon show the other day (I think that's her name), and she was talking about how more and more people are buying gifts for people for Christmas that actually help others out in the process. It seems that people are becoming more interested in helping others around the world while blessing people with a gift at the same time. After my trip to Colombia I believe even more in this idea!
My dear sister-in-law Kathy, who birthed the Edeva website, has chosen to lend support to a very worthwhile cause. She has hooked up with a young woman who has helped women in the Dominican Republic to start up a store (La Tienda) in which they sell their uniquely hand-designed items in order to have the funds to buy beans and rice to feed their families. The beautiful bracelet pictured above was made by the ladies in the Dominican. Please check out the following links to find out more about the La Tienda product line including other jewelery, handmade cards etc. You can even host a La Tienda party and receive a video to show at the party that explains more about the store and how it helps women to support their families and give them a sense of independence and pride.
If you would really like to get involved in helping to support these amazing women, you can join the Army of 100, where Kath is trying to recruit 100 women who will commit to saving a mere $2 a week for a year to help the women to purchase the actual store "La Tienda" where they sell their products. Please check out the link and consider helping out! (copy and paste the address if the link doesn't work)
I've starting saving already and it's such a great feeling to know that I can help out in a tangible way, especially after seeing the poverty of so many people while in Colombia. We really have no idea here in Canada of what true poverty really is. I have to say, I have little tolerance for the greed that I've been hearing surrounding the upcoming Christmas season from my own kids. I try to explain to them about how they have everything they could ever need and that there are so many kids who have nothing, but how can you ever really get them to understand? I have no idea.
So please, as you do your Christmas shopping this year, remember those who have far less than we do here in Canada. Consider making that commitment to help out those who are less fortunate than us...by giving them a chance to support their families. Please join the Army of 100 with me. And for those women who read my blog from the area, I will be hosting a La Tienda party on Thursday December 21st. Please e-mail me if you are interested in coming out. You can do some last minute Christmas shopping as Kath tells me she'll be bringing lots of products along.
