I love this pic that I took of my buddy Ryan in the Houston airport when we had our 7 hour layover on the way to Colombia. must have been a riveting book eh? It's about how I'm feeling right now. I feel so worn out from the holidays, from my kids being all wound up for weeks on end (and now having 2 weeks off of school), from waiting for my clients to deliver, from thinking of cleaning up the Christmas decorations. Argh.
On the other hand...
As I approach the dawn of a new year, I am very happy with 2006. It was a great year! I got to know a lot of people a lot better than I knew them a year ago, I started this blog (which I'm really enjoying), I got to travel to Colombia and attend 5 births (so far). It's been a great year! We even saw our family grow by another darling baby (sweet Ellie).
I've really been trying to get the kids to realize how blessed we are lately (in light of the massive consumerism of the Christmas season I suppose). As I think back to my Colombia trip and to the women in the Dominican that I am helping to support through LaTienda, I am reminded daily by how RICH we are here in North America. How do you get your kids to appreciate something that they've always known and can't comprehend others not having. Like three meals a day, or being able to eat every day for that matter. I have contacted the woman who started up LaTienda and am going to be receiving a box of products created by women who are now able to eat daily because of people like Rachel (and those who support her mission). When I get the box I plan to post pictures of some of the products and people can order them directly through me. It's thrilling to know that I can actually help those women in a tangible way to have dignity in their lives. Check out: http://www.latienda.moonfruit.com/ and look at Tita's story. It's such an inspiring story...to see how her life has been changed through this mission. Praise the Lord that people like Rachel are willing to leave their comfort zones to help women like Tita to have a chance at a life of dignity, to be empowered and to be able to care for her children by creating beautiful things. Incredible.
As we approach the New Year and you look back over 2006. Remember all the blessings you have experienced...even just by living in this beautiful country. You could have just as easily been born in Africa, or Colombia, or the Domincan Republic. Be grateful for every blessing you enjoy on a daily basis. Thanks God!
Melanie
