Well, this March has definitely come in like a Lion!! Our area was hit with a freezing rain storm yesterday evening, causing 15 hydro poles to snap off and leaving thousands of people without hydro last night and all day today. Some hydro customers may not get their power back until early next week I heard them say on the news! We are blessed...we had no power yesterday evening and it came on for about a half hour, then on and off all night, but it was back on to stay for the day (thankfully!). At playgroup this morning there were several moms who brought the kids to stay warm because they had no power at home.
So of course, today was another snow day for the kids. That has to be at least 11 so far this school year. It's been a little crazy. I really could have used the school day today. Lyric and I would have been on our own. Ah well, I did my best to keep the kids busy. Playgroup was a relief because I wouldn't have made it through the day sane without it.
I heard of a car accident today that killed 6 and 7 year old siblings and the mom that was driving is in critical condition. I just can't imagine what that poor father is going through right now. The news tonight was full of images of car accidents, downed power lines, trees that had fallen on cars and even into a woman's pool, floods, a fire engine turned on it's side injuring 4 firefighters, and most disturbing to me was the story of the 31 year old paramedic's funeral today in a nearby county. That shook me up. I've always thought that at least there is comfort in knowing that on days like today Joel is in a big rig so he would probably be okay if he were to be in a crash, then this happens. A friend of ours who is also a paramedic in the area was almost struck by 2 different cars last Thursday during that wicked storm. They just received their fluorescent yellow jackets, which make them glow in the dark, and our friend was still in danger of being killed twice.
The one thing I was impressed about was the number of people that came out to pay their respects to the young paramedic who was killed. We always see the fanfare when police or firemen are killed, and Joel always makes comments about how a medic would never receive the same honour, but it looked like he did. Medics from as far away as Edmonton flew in for the funeral to show their respect. Paramedics really do risk their lives to help other people and they should be recognized for their bravery and sacrifice. Every day that Joel works he is putting his health at risk by coming in contact with diseases that many of us would never be exposed to. Plus risking his life attending car accidents on highways where moron drivers still insist on squeezing by the accident scene so they can get home on time (this is what happened when our friend was nearly killed). A person driving a white sunfire squeezed between the Ambulance and the car that had been in the accident when our friend was leaning in the window of the car talking to the passenger. This dude managed to hit the Ambulance as well as the other car, causing it to knock our buddy out of the way. We found out later that the sunfire ended up in the ditch after this funky maneuver (serves him right!).
Anyway, I send out prayers on days like today for all those emergency workers who have no choice to stay off the roads. They all deserve our respect and honour.
Melanie
