Our Lickey has been diligently practising her new skill of cutting paper with scissors. She LOVES it. Straight scissors and a sheet of plain white paper from the printer will keep her busy for ages as she cuts. Unfortunately cleaning the mess of little shards of paper all over the floor when she's done is the part she hates and throws a fit about each time she cuts.
As you can see by the pictures, cutting is not a skill that can be practised with the tongue IN the mouth. Oh no, when this kind of focus is necessary, the tongue HAS to be OUT! I tried not to laugh so hard when I was taking these pictures (I didn't want to break her concentration :), but it was so unbelievably cute the way her tongue was sliding from side to side as she focused so completely on the task at hand. What is it about sticking your tongue out that helps you to focus?
I know I was (not sure if I still am) a tongue sticker-outer when I'm concentrating. I recall once when I was taking horseback riding lessons I was working on some very difficult jumps with a horse. As I was taking my horse over one of the jumps I remember my coach yelling "you'd better get your tongue back in your mouth when you go over that jump or you're going to bite it off when the horse lands". I didn't like the sounds of that so I had to focus and make sure I didn't stick my tongue out on those jumps (this is multi-tasking....you know, like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time). I also recall my ballet instructor telling one of my fellow dancers last year to stop sticking her tongue out or she'd look silly in the recital :)
Joel would kill me if I talked about the 3 minute (or so)video that I took of him a couple of years ago when he was cutting a tree down in our backyard and his mouth was very busy while he was concentrating. He did this adorable lip-pursing thing and his lips went in and out so quickly it was quite mesmerizing (and HILARIOUS). He of course didn't realize he was doing it until he saw the video. Let's just say it was a little embarrassing for him. Oh, if only it was in digital format and I could share it with all of you :)
I guess we've probably all got little things that we do with our face when we're focused on something. I'm so glad I could catch Lickey's on film !

Very cute!
Still wondering...did Joel and Obi stay outside ALL night the other night?

Yuppers....they managed to last the night. Joel had to come in to use the bathroom once and said he couldn't stop his body from shaking (he didn't get his coat and all that on to come in the house). He said they were plenty warm though while in their beds out there.
Yeah...crazy eh?! In the morning the first thing Obi said to Daddy was "Can we sleep in the Quinzhee next Friday night Dad?". Joel had to laugh.

Oh she is SO cute, it's too though that we do concentrate better with our tongues out. Same with plucking our eyebrows, it cannot be done with our mouh closed. haha
love you mel
